A passport may be seen as the first step for entering another country or embarking upon a different stage in our lives. When we travel, we experience new things and return to our day-to-day different, with a new rhythm and new habits and feelings, which we’d like to maintain over the course of our lives. We may view a passport as providing access to this new life style that we want to preserve. And, if this Passport is Green, it will most likely result in new habits related to sustainability.

The best trips are those that create lifelong memories, where we’re in touch with ourselves, mingle with new cultures and part of them remains in us. Sustainability is like a good trip: once we’re in contact with it, with its values and meanings, with its rhythm and standards, we are also changed and will never again be the same.

The planet needs us to adopt a new lifestyle – one that is more linked to experiences and contact with people and less related to consumption. The human community is growing at an accelerated pace, adding 80 million people to the world every year. We are not merely inhabitants of the planet Earth, but something else also defines us: we are consumers. As the purchasing power of the population increases in many countries, one-third of all human beings are lacking food. We live in an era where it is increasingly apparent that we need to review our consumption and production patterns.

Turning off the lights when we leaveour room or shutting off the tap when we brush our teeth is not going to save the planet – or even ourselves. Not if we are alone! They are not enough on their own, unless they are a reflection of a greater value that we have adopted, to seek after solutions that have a lower impact on our day-to-day, to demand better alternative technologies and government and corporate actions that give us more sustainable options and protect the natural heritage that we still have. It will not make a difference unless we see ourselves as part of a larger movement.

Making more sustainable choices when planning and experiencing times of leisure, such as tourism, favor the adoption of new habits in our daily lives. It’s a time when we break out of our routine, leave our car at home, unplug ourselves from the electronic gadgets continually surrounding us and enjoy the scenery, walking, biking and spending time with family or friends, far from stress. Green Passport proposes filling this time with more authentic experiences, more sustainable travel itineraries and simple ideas on how to lessen your impact when visiting other places! We hope that many will respond to this call and be inspired by the invitation arising from sustainability to take up a new lifestyle and that the sensation of freedom and connection with what matters the most in life – wellness, the joy of living, nature, family and friends – will be part of your daily life when you return home!

I take care of my destination!
